Google adds Kotlin as a new language for making Android apps

Google announced that it's making Kotlin a "first-class" language for making Android apps. Make no mistake, it's not going to replace already existing ones like Java and C++.

Kotlin is a really new language built by JetBrains whom also made IntelliJ, an IDE being used in Android Studio.

Just like Java, Kotlin runs on the JVM (Java Virtual Machine) which means it's interoperable with Java.

Now that Google is supporting the language, it'll presumably make working with Kotlin more natural.
Kotlin has a lot of similarities to Java, it's object oriented and statically typed, in some ways it's even better than Java. It also has a nicer syntax and must-have features Java didn't have.

Unlike the Swift programming language built by Apple, Google won't own Kotlin. JetBrains is also teaming up with Google to set up a nonprofit foundation for the language. Kotlin support will be included with Android Studio 3.0.
