Get Ready. Android O is coming.

Android 8 AKA Android O is heading our way after much anticipation. The developer preview has already been first released and you can get it on the Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P and Nexus Player here.

Google plans on revealing more about the "O" in its I/O conference in May.

Here are some of the major features included in Android O.

  • Decreased background activity for apps leading to better battery life and capacity.
  • As as result of Sony's partnership with Android, LDAC support will now come to Android meaning higher quality audio and better support for wireless earphones.
  • Notifications from the same app will now be grouped to prevent multiple and unnecessary notifications. Plus notifications can now be grouped into "High Priority", "Low Priority", and "Marketing" so you can choose which you want to show up.
  • Picture in Picture viewing will now work for any video on your phone. We've seen this feature in the YouTube app which enables you to shrink videos down to a small box allowing you watch a video while doing something else on your phone.
  • Autofill APIs have been added. Similar to how you can select a default keyboard app, you can now select a default Autofill app i.e. Password Managers.
  • Adaptive Icons that "adapt" to the native icon shape of your phone.
  • Enhanced keyboard support that allows you navigate apps using the tab and arrow keys.
  • Wi-Fi Aware technology that allows you to connect to other phones without an internet connection.

Here are a few videos explaining Android O.

This is only the beginning, we can just speculate what sweets Android O is going to be named after. (Android 8.0 Oreo?)
